What to Expect During Your Open MRI at Pennsauken Diagnostic Center

If you feel anxious or claustrophobic about having an MRI, Open MRI offers a more comfortable alternative to traditional closed scanners.

How Open MRI Works

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive exam that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the body — without radiation. Open MRI uses the same advanced technology but features a more open design, helping patients feel less confined during the scan.

A Comfortable Option for Anxious Patients

Open MRI is ideal for patients who experience claustrophobia, anxiety, or discomfort in enclosed spaces. The open structure allows for better visibility and communication with the technologist throughout the exam, creating a calmer experience for many patients.

What to Expect During Your Exam

During your appointment, you’ll be positioned comfortably on the scanning table. The exam typically lasts about 30 minutes, sometimes longer, depending on the area being imaged. You may hear tapping or clicking sounds as images are captured — this is completely normal. Many patients find it more comfortable than a closed MRI.

After Your Scan

There’s no recovery time needed after an Open MRI. Images are reviewed by board-certified radiologists, and results are sent to your referring physician, usually within 24–48 hours.
