If you have an imaging appointment coming up, chances are you have a few questions you may not think to ask when scheduling. What should you wear? Can you eat beforehand? What about jewelry? And how long will the scan actually take?

At Pennsauken Diagnostic Center, we understand that knowing what to expect can make your visit feel a little easier. Here are answers to some of those common questions.

What Should I Wear?

Comfort is key. For an imaging appointment, loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove is a good choice. Depending on your exam, you may be asked to change into a gown.

Metal can interfere with certain types of imaging, so you may also need to remove items such as jewelry, eyeglasses, hair clips, or clothing with metal fasteners.

Can I Eat Before My Appointment?

That depends on the type of imaging you are having.

For example, an abdominal ultrasound requires patients to avoid eating, drinking, chewing gum, or smoking for eight hours before the exam. Other ultrasound exams may have different preparation instructions, including arriving with a full bladder. Some exams require no special preparation at all.

Always follow the specific preparation instructions provided for your exam.

Why Is Gel Used During an Ultrasound?

During an ultrasound, a lubricating gel is placed on the skin to help the handheld transducer move smoothly and obtain clear images. The exam is non-invasive and does not use X-ray radiation.

Most ultrasound scans are completed within about 30 minutes, and patients can typically return to their normal activities afterward.

How Long Will My Imaging Take?

It depends on the exam. Digital X-rays themselves take only a few minutes, with patients generally finished within 30 minutes. Most ultrasound exams are also completed within about 30 minutes.

During your exam, your technologist will guide you through the process. Depending on the imaging being performed, you may be asked to stand, sit, lie down, change positions, or briefly hold your breath to help obtain the necessary images.
