PDC’s Open MRI Helps Diagnose Shoulder Pain - Perfect for a Claustrophobic Patient

Many patients come to Pennsauken Diagnostic Center suffering with shoulder pain. Some patients sustained injuries due to an automobile accident, some suffered a sports injury involving repetitive, overhead motion (swimming, tennis, weight-lifting, pitching), and others while doing chores at home - such as gardening, hanging pictures or curtains. In addition, there may be unexplained shoulder pain, necessitating diagnostic testing to determine the root cause of pain.

According to the World Health Organization, shoulder pain affects 9% of adults in the U.S. Shoulder pain can affect our daily routine at home, making it difficult to:

  • Stretch, when waking up

  • Reach for the toothpaste and brush one’s teeth

  • Brush or comb hair

  • Get dressed - putting on a shirt or sweater

  • Make breakfast - simply pouring a glass of orange juice

This incredible ball and socket system - the shoulder, enables us to lift and carry, twist, throw and reach - often with little to no thought, all day long. If these activities are now associated with pain, numbness or tingling in the shoulder or down the arm, please speak with your doctor to determine if an evaluation and care are recommended. If severe, seek immediate medical care.

To help confirm a diagnosis or in the development of a treatment plan, your doctor may recommend an MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a non-invasive procedure, utilizing magnetic fields, radio waves, and computers (not x-rays) to generate detailed images of soft tissues within the body.

At Pennsauken Diagnostic Center, we offer an Open MRI to help reduce stress and provide a comfortable MRI experience. The benefits are enormous, especially to those who are anxious, claustrophobic, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, or for a pediatric, elderly, frail, or large habitus patients. PDC’s Open MRI, eliminates a narrow, closed-in experience and, you are in close-proximity - visually and verbally to the technician. For those who need a little extra hand-holding, our Open MRI often provides physical contact with a family member or friend.

If you are having difficulty sleeping, participating in sports or hobbies, or unable to perform work-related activities due to shoulder pain, please speak with your doctor.
