Did You Know? Ultrasound Can Show the Body in Real Time

When your healthcare provider needs a closer look at what may be happening inside your body, ultrasound can provide valuable information without the use of X-ray radiation.

Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to generate images of tissues and organs inside the body. A handheld device called a transducer sends sound waves through the body. Those waves bounce off structures inside the body, similar to an echo, and return to the transducer to create images that can be viewed on a computer monitor.

Why Is Ultrasound Useful?

Because ultrasound creates dynamic images of the body, it can help physicians evaluate certain organs, tissues and blood vessels. At Pennsauken Diagnostic Center, ultrasound imaging may be used to evaluate areas such as the abdomen, pelvis and vascular system.

Ultrasound can also help physicians investigate symptoms such as pain and swelling, evaluate certain diseases, or assess how well a treatment or therapy is working.

What Can You Expect During an Ultrasound?

During most ultrasound exams, a lubricating gel is applied to the skin and a transducer is gently moved over the area being examined to obtain clear images. Depending on the type of scan, you may be asked to change positions or briefly hold your breath.

Most ultrasound scans at Pennsauken Diagnostic Center are completed within approximately 30 minutes and require no downtime, allowing patients to return to their normal activities afterward.
